Isn’t Wednesday the day Gawker Media buys lunch for all employees?

6% guaranteed year on year? I had to work my arse off for less, and even then its negotiable subject to performance.

I can’t knock them for trying to get more money, but I would call a 2 hour noon walkout just a “long lunch”.

I know 6% increase per year sounds bad compared to most positions, but its just negotiating. I presume they’re expecting a counter around 3-4%, which will be accepted. Like anything else, you start high, then come down.

What makes this more funny, is Gawker is basically a blog site where they just pull articles from reputable sources and then just write an opinion piece about them. That is LITERALLY all Gawker.com is (not Gawker Media as a whole, mind you).

This is my problem with unions, they make contacts that leave the company inflexible to the world around them. Too many people think just because they exist they should make money and more money disregarding performance.
If a company succeeds and makes more money they should give their employees more money. If not, then the company shouldn't dig the grave further by paying people more for not meeting expectations.

Actually that is LITERALLY Gawker Media as a whole (including Jalopnik - not talking about all Kinja sites).

From the article you linked, “guaranteed six percent annual increase. Management has offered… zero percent.”
Both sides of that sound pretty unreasonable, but taken out of context who knows what the full truth is. Having been involved in these sorts of negotiations, what leaks out to the public, is often very different from what is really happening behind the scenes.

The union is free to ask.
They won’t get it, but they can ask.

Heck, I'm happy to just stay [barely] afloat with my bills. I only want a raise so I can pay off debt quicker, that's it.

Definitely.
As a small business owner I run into people who expect the world given to them for minimal work. Young people, for the most part, don't seem to understand how businesses work. They seem to think of you sell a widget for $10 then they should make at least $10, if not more. They also don't seem to understand that everyone on this planet is replaceable. No person is bigger than the game, as they say.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting more for you and your family.
I think you should be rewarded when you help a company succeed. My problem is when people expect more regardless of their effort. Or in this case a union trying to get a company locked into auto raises regardless of the market. No harm in wanting it but it's potentially damaging to the company.

6% cost of living increase? Supposedly on top of merit increases? That’s unreal.

On top of that these people don’t really make anything. They just exaggerate and inflame other people’s work.

Remember, they’re bloggers. That’s what they do. Some are good writers. Some are not.
The bulk of what they do is what you said. Some blogs more than others.
My problem is they’re asking for guaranteed more money every year regardless of how the company is doing and regardless of how well they did their job.
I think they should make more if the company makes more money. They are creating the content that brings in advertisers that then give them money. In theory, bad content equals less ads, leading to less revenue/profits. The reverse, in theory, is true as well.
I guess what I'm saying is a bonus system is more beneficial to both parties (employees and employers) as opposed to guaranteed raises which is one sided and potentially harmful to employers.

Entitlement level: off the charts. They are headquartered in an office in one of the most expensive cities in the world, doing a job that could be done anywhere (including from a recliner at home), and demanding 6% COL adjustments to deal with increasing housing costs that the influx of “creative professionals” like themselves have caused. The parent company should just move the office to Linden or Secaucus so they can’t complain about rising costs of living; someone has to burst the NYC bubble.
Flamesuit on.

I’m not so much opposed to cost of living increases, but 6% is more than inflation and double what most corporations even give for merit based raises. Personally I hate bonuses because they are taxed higher.

6% is laughable.
With a bonus system or something like it, you get a better quality employee that has an invested interest based on them working harder for a healthier company.
That bonus may be taxed more, but that’s more money than not having the bonus at all.
Think of it this way: you make $35k at job a. Job b is $35k plus a bonus up to an additional $10k. You're still making that base rate but have a chance or making more. Which would you take and which job would you be willing to work more for?

The bonus obviously but I’d rather get wage increases for solid performance than a bonus.
